I
was told this was one of only three assembled & made
in Christchurch by
a Panelbeater / Engineer, whose name I have now forgotten.
One
of the others was a hardtop version and I don’t know
what the third one was.
I
was visiting a friend, one day back in 1983, when I spied this one
sitting in his back yard. After a bit of talking, he offered it to
me for $2,500. It didn’t have a warrant of
fitness and needed brakes to get one. (What are brakes for ?)
Anyway, $2,500, plus another $500 for repairs and I was driving
around in a warranted and registered sports-car.
It
was built using Anglia & Cortina mechanicals
and ran an Anglia motor.
It
was no power-house, but was a fun car to drive. A bit like most English
sportscars from the 50s & 60s.
It looked better than what it went. It did handle like a go cart
on rails though, and I had a lot of fun crossing it up and getting
it sideways when I got an un-suspecting passenger (usually of the
female kind) in the car.
It was so low, that with the aerial down, it would fit under
the old toll barriers on the Tauranga Harbour bridge.
Like I
said, I had a ball with this car, but $8000 persuaded me to part with
it, and it went to live in Auckland.
